Iris
The term"Iris" is freely used in the gardening community. Technically, it refers to members of the Genus "Iris", which is part of the Iridaceae family. Most of the plants we associate with Irises are found in this genus. However, plants such as the Walking Iris and the African Iris are not members of the Iris genus. The flowers listed below are confined to the Iris genus.
- Overview While the bloom period is relatively short (April - May), the flowers are spectacular.
- Southern Blue Flag Iris (iris virginica) Produces lavender flowers in the Spring. Needs ample moisture. Can grow in standing water and is ideal for pond borders. Hardy in Zones 8B - 11. When planting on 2-feet-centers, the plants will form a thick ground cover in about 2 years. While it will do well in a perennial border, it may "wander". Prefers light shade and only one or two applications of fertilizer a year.
- Blue Flag Iris (iris versicolor) Similar to the I. virginica, but with shorter standards.
- Japanese Roof Iris (iris tectorum)
12' to 18' tall. Blue flowers in the Spring.
- Louisiana Hybrids (iris fulva) Hardy in Zones 6 - 10.
- Yellow Flag Iris (iris pseudacorus)
- Prairie Iris (iris hexagona)
