Walking Iris or Apostle Plant
- Neomarica (Walking Iris or Apostle Plant) is hardy in Zones 10 and 11. Can grow in Zone 9 with some protection (if the root stock is protected, it can be grown in Zone 8). Do not deadhead the flowers, since the stalk will eventually bend over from the weight of the emerging stems and root in the ground - giving the plant the appearance of slowing "walking" across the garden.
Prefers partial shade.
- Brazilian Iris (neomarica gracilis or caerulea ) Sends out short-lived Iris like flowers in late Spring. Tough, hardy, quickly spreading plants that can be divided easily. Good for containers (some gardeners claim the plant flowers more profusely if pot bound).
